In 2024, sustainability has taken a front seat across the globe, with organizations and governments making noteworthy progress in reducing their environmental impact. A striking example comes from Singapore’s Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE), which released its GreenGov.SG Report for Fiscal Year 2024. The report highlights a commendable 1.9% decrease in carbon dioxide equivalent emissions compared to the previous year, amounting to a 9.5% reduction from the 2020 baseline. This success is largely credited to strategic moves like decommissioning the Tuas Waste-To-Energy Plant in 2022 and optimizing the remaining facility at Tuas South, demonstrating effective public sector environmental stewardship.
On the corporate front, 2024 has seen remarkable sustainability achievements across various industries. PepsiCo made headlines by expanding regenerative agriculture practices over 3.5 million acres, powering 89% of its global operations with renewable electricity, and replenishing over 24 billion liters of water into local ecosystems. OPPO exceeded expectations by hitting its climate goals two years early, including innovations like lightweight packaging that reduced paper use by 10 tons per million units.
Siemens also reported an impressive 60% reduction in CO₂e emissions since 2019, outpacing its 2025 target, while endorsing over 25,000 products with its EcoTech environmental label. Meanwhile, Meta has maintained net-zero emissions since 2020, cutting emissions by 94% since 2017 by matching all electricity consumption with renewable sources.
Industry trends in Singapore further emphasize the role of technology in sustainability. A Schneider Electric report from October 2024 revealed that over half (53%) of Singaporean companies plan to invest more than S$700,000 in sustainable transitions over the next two years, prioritizing digitalization to drive these efforts.
Together, these initiatives underscore a robust global commitment to sustainability. Both public sectors and private enterprises are innovating and investing in strategies that not only lower carbon footprints but also build the foundation for a sustainable, environmentally responsible future.
