The Rising Tide of Electric Vehicles: Global Trends and Insights for 2024

Electric vehicles (EVs) are accelerating their presence on the world’s roads, marking significant growth that signals a transformative shift in the automotive landscape. In 2023 alone, nearly 14 million new electric cars were registered globally, making up around 18% of all new car sales—a notable leap from just 14% in 2022 and a mere 2% in 2018. This surge highlights the expanding acceptance and demand for cleaner transportation alternatives worldwide.

Looking closer at specific regions, the momentum is equally impressive. The United States saw EVs and hybrids combined capturing 20% of new car and truck sales in 2024, pushing traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles down to less than 80% of sales for the first time in history. This shift reflects increasing consumer interest and policy support for electric mobility.

Even more striking is Singapore’s rapid EV adoption, where one out of every three new cars registered in the first five months of 2024 was electric, accounting for 32.6% of new registrations—almost doubling the previous year’s 18.1% share. Singapore’s swift transition showcases how smaller markets can quickly pivot toward sustainable transportation with the right incentives and infrastructure.

Despite these encouraging trends, ICE vehicles still dominate the global vehicle fleet, underscoring the gradual nature of this transition. However, the tide is turning, propelled by continuous technological advancements in EV design and battery durability. A recent study revealed modern EV batteries are more resilient than many realize, retaining 95% of their original range even after five years—alleviating common concerns about battery longevity and total cost of ownership.

Government incentives, growing environmental awareness, and evolving consumer preferences are all converging to drive this ongoing shift. The gradual replacement of ICE vehicles with EVs promises a cleaner, more sustainable future, transforming how the world moves one electric mile at a time.
