Durians in the Digital Age: How Tech is Transforming the 2026 Season

As Singapore eagerly awaits the arrival of Malaysia’s coveted durian harvest this June, sellers are bracing for an unpredictable season shaped by fickle weather patterns. Heavy rainfall, a growing concern for the industry, has made the harvest increasingly challenging. Not only can it spoil the taste and ripeness of durians, but it also threatens to destabilize market prices, even during times of abundant supply.

In the face of these uncertainties, the durian trade is embracing groundbreaking technological solutions. Sellers have taken to livestreaming platforms, peeling and presenting their durians in real time to throngs of remote buyers. This approach has paid off, with some vendors enjoying a 50% surge in online sales compared to the previous year.

To further fortify supply chains, companies are investing in preservation technologies that keep durians fresh for months after harvest. Singapore’s own Spike Durian uses electromagnetic-field-assisted freezing, locking in the fruit’s flavor within five hours of picking. With storage capacities stretching up to six months, the startup has shipped nearly 5,000 boxes since launching in December, drawing international interest from countries across Asia, Europe, and even the US.

Meanwhile, established vendors like 99 Old Trees Durian are building up frozen inventories using liquid nitrogen, stockpiling tons of fruit each year. Their frozen durian not only satisfies off-season cravings but finds its way into popular desserts like chendol, mousse, and cream puffs. By producing durian paste, they’re also supplying local bakeries and ice cream shops, helping their business weather the ebb and flow of the harvest calendar.

The outlook for the 2026 durian season is clear: while nature may keep sellers guessing, technology is offering new ways to connect with fans and smooth out supply. Whether you’re following your favorite livestream or biting into a frozen treat, this year’s durian experience is set to be both innovative and delicious.
